Speaker: Steph Elliot
Storm Petrels are one of the most enigmatic of our British seabirds. Not much bigger than a sparrow, they can live for up to 30 years and spend much of their time wandering the Atlantic Ocean. When they do come ashore to breed, they do so under the cover of darkness to enter their underground burrows. Much of their lifestyle remains a mystery, but we are gradually learning more about the endearing wee 'stormie'.
Steph Elliott is the RSPB's site manager for Priest Island in Wester Ross, where around 5,000 storm petrels breed. Along with a team of dedicated volunteers, we've been studying the population change on Priest Island for about the last 10 years. Come along to this talk to find out how much we have learnt, and how difficult it is to count a seabird that nests in underground burrows!
