THE CONCEPT
Who is behind this ground breaking event?
Scotland’s Housing Expo is supported by a consortium of agencies, including: Highland Council, Scottish Government, Sust. – [the Government’s Sustainability in Architecture Programme], Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Forestry Commission, Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, Inverness Architectural Association, Highland Birchwoods and Homes for Scotland.
Highland Housing Alliance is responsible for the site and the house building elements of the Expo.
Scotland's Housing Expo is the first event of its kind in Scotland to showcase over 50 house designs of the future - which people from all backgrounds, ages and income brackets can afford. It aims to make good design and sustainable features commonplace in every home - just like the indoor WC that was such a revelation in the 1930s!
The main focus of the Housing Expo will be the 55 show homes, supported by a programme of events including exhibitions and seminars around themed weeks. When the Expo ends, the houses will be available to buy and/ or rent and it will become a living community.
The event is constructed around the keystone that defines what homes of the future will be built on - quality of design combined with sustainability. The 55 homes on display will all illustrate how architects have responded to the need for sustainable housing by design, innovation and energy efficiency in their use of materials and interior layouts, to create ultimate sustainable living spaces for the next generation.
The event is based on a successful model that has been used in Europe for decades and is a proactive response to the challenges that face house designers and builders of the future. It originated in Finland, where it is the country’s largest outdoor event of the year, attracting hundreds and thousands of visitors including tourists and interested professionals. The sourcing and use of local materials, solar design (including Passive House), the innovative approach to construction and the creative use of living space are just some of the features that will inspire the people who build houses - and those destined to live in them.
